Lower School Student GovernmentThe student council is an active and important element of the middle school program and serves as a voice for all of our students in Lower School. The council works to encourage character development, values, and a sense of respect and responsibility at Santa Catalina. The student council for Lower School is made up of class representatives from grades four through eight and four council officers. The offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer are held by eighth grade students. Student elections are conducted in April following campaigning and public addresses by the candidates. Under the supervision of a faculty advisor, the student council meets regularly to discuss issues pertaining to the needs of students, the school, the community and the global environment, and to research possibilities for fundraising projects. Recipients of funds have included a local shelter, the Red Cross Global Disaster Fund, and the New York City Fire Department September 11 Fund. The council also plans "free dress days" with the approval of the administration. These days are always greatly anticipated as the council leads the student body in creative ideas for free dress. The student council officers conduct the middle school morning assemblies. Officers are called upon to speak at special assemblies such as Veterans' Day, Official Flag Raising and Lowering Ceremonies, and at our Open House for prospective parents and students. The officers are expected to serve as role models for the student body. Their conduct both behaviorally and academically is observed by all, especially our youngest students. It is with this in mind that all officers must be in good standing to run for election and to hold office. |
