Senior Wins Weston Scholarship Award
Senior Mallory Jebbia was awarded second place in the Weston Scholarship Competition. Mallory’s portfolio of ten mounted/matted photographs and the one page statement discussing her work garnered her the $500 second place scholarship. She is the first Santa Catalina student to receive an award from the Weston Photography Education Association. The Gina and Kim Weston Scholarship Fund was established to support high school and college students studying art photography in Monterey County. The competition is specifically targeted to photography students using conventional analogue processes as well as traditional alternative processes. Congratulations to Mallory on her award-winning portfolio!
Junior Awarded Merit Scholarship for Summer Art Program
Junior Rosemary Hall will be attending the summer program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with the added bonus of a $500 merit scholarship. After being accepted to the program, Rosemary decided to apply for a merit scholarship, requiring her to submit a digital portfolio of her work, an annotated slide sheet and an artist’s statement. Her efforts were rewarded as the recipient of the merit scholarship. Congratulations to Rosemary for this achievement!
Upper School Students Raise Over $4,000 to Relieve Human Suffering
Santa Catalina Upper School students raised over $4,000 to relieve human suffering around the world. Of the $3,600 sent to Catholic Relief Services, $1,200 is designated for aid to Myanmar, where the recent cyclone has caused so much suffering; $1,200 goes to aid Darfur refugees, whose plight was detailed by Dr. Ashis Brahma who spoke at school earlier this year; and $1,200 went into the CRS general fund to support emergency relief, development, health care, and food distribution around the world. In addition, $400 was contributed to our Santa Catalina Christian Children’s Fund to help in the long-term support of our special children overseas.
So once again, congratulations to the 19 students who participated in the Food Fast this year! Of these we would like to give special recognition to Hayley Berra, Agnes Cho, Emily Grunwald, and Kyra Morrissey for reaching their fund-raising goal of at least $200 each.
Some of our students went “over the top” in their efforts to make a dent in world hunger. Tied for second place were Wendy Hopper and Joanne Pham, both of whom raised over $400. Finally, tripling the amount we hoped for, Gia Seo and Danyel Kahumoku took the lead, each raising over $600! Thanks to so many of you in the Santa Catalina Community who made donations and supported this effort. It would not have happened without all of you.

 |
|
Senior Devan Kennifer was named as the 2008 Central Coast Section Female Scholar/Athlete-of-the-Year, winning a $1,500 scholarship. The award acknowledges Devan’s accomplishments in the competitive sports arena, in the classroom, and in the school community. “Devan is as tough and as smart as any player I have coached at any level. Having her on your team is like having a coach in the water at all times. She is a hard worker both in the pool and in the classroom. She is well deserving of this award,” enthused Jim Morton, water polo and swim coach at Santa Catalina. The recipient of the CCS Female Scholar/Athlete-of-the-Year award is a graduating senior, with a minimum 3.5 GPA and a SAT score of at least 1500. She must also have competed at the varsity level for a CCS school for at least two years and have an exemplary record of positive athletic and non- athletic citizenship. Celebrated Poet Dick Davis Focus of Poet-in-Residence Program
This week Santa Catalina is hosting celebrated poet Dick Davis for in-depth literature analysis and poetry readings during our Poet-in-Residence program at school. Dr. Davis is an accomplished writer (having published several books of original poetry--the most recent being A Trick of Sunlight, 2006) and a respected translator of Persian literature. He comes to us from Ohio State University, where he teaches Persian Literature and Language and is Chair of the Near-Eastern Studies program.
Dr. Davis’ visit represents the ninth year of a very successful program at Santa Catalina in which we have hosted a distinguished poet each year (including four Poets Laureate of the United States), and the third year in which a poet has been at school for a full week. During the week Dr. Davis will meet with almost every Upper School English class (including twice with Creative Writing) to discuss both his poems and poetry in general.
From Booklist: “His poems are full of fine emotion, intelligence, wit, and multinational culture. He often muses on the shortness of life and the limitations of being human, so cogently that a single quatrain can take one’s breath away. Perhaps these are old-fashioned poems, but they feel so contemporary, so present, that they persuade one that contemporary and old-fashioned are sometimes the same thing.”
Dr. Davis will be reading his poetry aloud on Wednesday, March 5, at 1:45 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The reading is open to the public. (Posted 3/4/2008.)

Upper School Winter Sports Roundup
Basketball
The basketball team had an ambitious preseason and finished second in the MTAL league. Their only two league losses were to rival Stevenson, the league champions. Nevertheless, the team advanced to the CIF/CCS playoffs where they faced Harbor High in the first round. Though it was a well-played game against Harbor, the Cougars lost 40-41. The team should be commended for their great season, finishing 12-2 in league and 17-6 overall. With seven players returning, the Cougars look poised to continue their success next year.
Equestrian
The equestrian team had a very successful season, both as a team and as individuals. The team placed second at the Monte Vista show with a number of riders earning individual awards. At the Thacher School show in January, the team placed third out of seven teams competing. Freshman Clementine Yost earned Champion, while junior Kenly Flanigan earned Reserve Champion. At the final show at Stanford University, Santa Catalina placed third on Saturday and fourth on Sunday. Congratulations to the following students who qualified for Zone Finals: Catherine Lentini, Brennah Montague, Allie Fithian, Clementine Yost, Briana Billingham, Martha Gustavson, and Cathleen Bettiga. Winners of the Zone Finals will compete at Nationals.
Soccer
After another ambitious preseason schedule, the soccer team went a perfect 10-0 in league competition, and 15-4-2 overall. They advanced to the CIF/CCS playoffs where they defeated Redwood Christian in the first round 6-0, before falling to Woodside Priory 3-1 in the quarter-finals for the second year in a row. After a recent win, Monterey Herald’s prep reporter, John Devine, interviewed goalkeeper Sarah Wright.
