Rosary Chapel History

Marcia Farrell Hart gave the Rosary Chapel in memory of her father, James Farrell. She commissioned the San Francisco architect Germano Milano as well as the gifted artisans who created its furnishings. She made certain that the Chapel and everything in it were made of the finest materials and with the most expert workmanship: the chalice and other altar vessels, wood carving by Alec Miller, chandeliers by Forge in the Forest, stained-glass windows by Carl Huneke, pews and altar of Honduran mahogany, redwood ceiling, and exteriors of Carmel stone. Mrs. Hart oversaw every aspect of its construction until the dedication in 1954, and she provided flowers for the altar at Christmas and Easter until her death.

Mrs. Hart was an early member of the Santa Catalina Foundation Board. Through her participation on the Foundation and her discussions with the Sisters, the needs of the school became apparent. She gave generously to meet those needs, large and small, whether they be land and buildings critical to the growth of the school or treasured mementos to a class of graduating seniors.
