
Marine Biology: Ready to dive into the world of marine habitats and explore the creatures that live there? High School science teacher Matt Binder takes students on field trips to the rocky shores and tide pools to observe and learn about animal and plant life. Students also study the Giant Kelp Forests off our coastline. In our science lab, they learn more about ocean habitats and then go out kayaking; they paddle right into the kelp forest canopy and encounter seals, sea lions, otters, and birds. Students also study the ocean firsthand during a morning of snorkeling which ties together many of the concepts learned throughout the course. Theatre Tech Workshop (Session B only): What has to happen behind the scenes of a musical production before the show can go on? In this fun and interactive morning workshop students learn about set design, props, sound and lighting on the set of our 500-seat theatre. They then put their knowledge and skills to work in providing the technical assistance for our musical production of The Music Man. Here’s your chance to be a techie! Hip-hop Dance: Have a blast in hip-hop class! In this dynamic class, students learn a selection of dance moves and hip-hop styles, and then put the moves together in a dance to be performed on stage. Taught by teachers Kristine Tarozzi and Monica Ringer. Jazz Dance: Jump into jazz! Come learn the basics of jazz dance from teachers Kristine Tarozzi and Monica Ringer, including leaps, turns, and a whole lot of moving. Perfect for anyone who likes music, from the beginner to experienced dancer. Students learn a complete dance that will be performed on stage. Broadway Show Choir: Do you yearn to sing and dance on stage? This class will give you that opportunity! Favorite musical numbers from Broadway shows are sung and choreographed. There is an opportunity for solo singing and being a part of the creative choreographic process. This is a great class for students with singing talent who would like the chance to perform on stage. Drama Improvisation and Scene Work: Experienced actor and director Anne Marie Hunter teaches this exciting and interactive class. She builds on the storytelling skills of the young actors by using improvisation techniques to challenge the students to exercise and use their imagination. Students perform scene work in class, while learning how to take stage direction and work collaboratively with classmates. Simple Meals with Pizzazz: Cook a variety of foods to prepare breakfasts, main dishes, salads, and healthy snacks while you learn proper cooking techniques and good nutritional choices in the process. Teacher Sharon Bohrman will share do-ahead tricks to help you create simple meals that you will enjoy serving your family and friends at home. Celebration Desserts: Desserts put measuring and other cooking skills to the test! In this class taught by Sharon Bohrman, you will learn proper techniques for success as you enhance your family traditions by creating special cookies, cakes, and pies for holidays and celebrations throughout the year. Be creative as you learn easy methods for simple cake decorating. Sharing Your Voice: This creative writing class, taught by Santa Catalina School English teacher Nancy Hunt, gives writers the opportunity to try various forms of poetry and more ambitious short stories. Students also draw “memory maps” and use them to write non-fiction based on their life stories, as well as produce a camp newspaper. The Art of Self-Portrait: In this class students learn how to create portraits, both realistic and symbolic. Students learn from artist Berit Andersen the creative use of pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, markers, and water-soluble crayons. Students will study the proportions of the human head and its parts. Color theory and composition are integrated into the curriculum. Painting with Watercolors: Learn the fun and creative art of watercolor painting under the guidance of artist Karen Welch. Students learn about drawing, brushwork, special papers, and how to mix vibrant colors. Students create flowers, learn perspective, make bookmarks and fans, and develop full-size watercolor paintings. Ceramics: Do you already know the basics of working with clay? Have you already learned all about slabs, coils, and pinch pots? This class is a good choice for students who would like the chance to “throw” a pot, to sit behind the potter’s wheel, and to work on new ceramics skills. Black and White Photography: In this class students learn composition and design from photography teacher Heather Dotto and have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of photo techniques, including Polaroid transfer. Students shoot black and white film and learn to develop it themselves. Each student is assigned an enlarger in our darkroom, which provides the opportunity for hands-on, individual learning. They also learn the development process and the basics of how pictures are formed via light exposure. Advanced Black and White Photography: This class is offered for campers that have already taken Black and White Photography at camp; they will continue to build on the portfolios they began in previous years at camp. Students will explore a variety of new techniques including Polaroid transfer, double exposures, color application, and adding text to their work. Each student is assigned an enlarger in our darkroom, which provides the opportunity for hands-on, individual learning. Digital Photography: Ready to combine your interest in photography with your computer skills? Students will have the opportunity to take digital photos and learn how to creatively manipulate and modify them. Experienced photography teacher Heather Dotto leads this class. Yoga: Whether you already practice yoga or are yearning to find out what it is all about, this class is for you. Yoga is a method of exercising your body, mind, and soul. You will learn breathing techniques and practice poses that can help you achieve a life-long foundation of well-being. |
