Upper School Faculty

As mentors, role models and advisors, faculty and staff are actively involved in students' lives. It is the excellence of their training, their accomplishments as individuals, and the depth of their commitment to their students and the school that makes Santa Catalina's faculty unique. A majority of the faculty hold masters or doctoral degrees in their fields. With more than half of the faculty living on campus, the faculty and their families create the warm, comfortable atmosphere that allows our community to become an extended family. Whether discussing a problem or simply sharing the day's events, students and faculty develop strong, lasting relationships.

Because virtually every experience of the day at Santa Catalina affords an opportunity for learning, guidance is a particularly important aspect of campus life. The advising system and the Office of Student Affairs provide girls with a range of opportunities for support. Whether a girl is developing organizational skills and leadership or is growing in self-assurance and independence, the importance of adult-student relationships in that process cannot be underestimated. Positive interaction between students and adults is most often far more influential than one realizes at the moment, and clear, thoughtful advice encourages girls to think more responsibly for themselves.

The advising system is a special part of all students' lives at Santa Catalina. A faculty advisor is assigned to each student, providing a link between the school and the family, and communication is thorough and frequent. With her advisor, the student reviews her academic progress, talks over plans and problems, keeps track of extracurricular obligations, and discusses daily life.

Dorm advisors provide an additional source of guidance and support. They welcome students into their homes to watch movies, bake cookies, and catch up on the day's activities. In addition to teaching and advising students, faculty participate as coaches of teams; as advisors to organizations, clubs, and campus publications; and as chaperones for weekend and evening activities both on and off campus. Warmth and mutual respect between Santa Catalina students and faculty are the basis of the community spirit so evident in daily life on campus.
