On CampusThe academic day begins at 7:55 with first period, but resident and many day students start the morning together in the dining hall, eating breakfast and planning for what's to come. During assembly (after second period) students and teachers meet as a community in Study Hall to make announcements, recognize birthdays, perform skits or scenes from upcoming theater events, and congratulate sports teams.The daily schedule allows for free time for extra studying, meetings with teachers, private music lessons, or gatherings with members of clubs, and assigned time for advisor and class meetings. After classes end at 2:30, afternoon team sports begin, as well as physical education classes, community service, and play rehearsal. Santa Catalina Traditions Annual traditions include:
Student/Faculty Senate Composed of faculty and students, the Student/Faculty Senate manages student affairs. It serves as a forum of student opinion, channels suggestions to the administration and acts upon given suggestions. It initiates programs, helps to organize student life on the campus, and is responsive to student and community needs. Senate membership includes faculty representatives and approximately fifteen students whose representation varies by semester. ![]() Resident Council This subdivision of Senate is a committee which deals with specific resident concerns. Resident Council is chaired by the Resident Coordinator. The Student Activities Coordinator is a standing member. Each dormitory elects two members to the Council. If necessary, a reelection occurs at the time of room change. Resident Council meets with the Dean of Students regularly each month. Following Community Dinner, the Resident Coordinator informs the resident students of Resident Council discussions and activities. Day Student Council This subdivision of Senate is an ad hoc committee convened as necessary to deal with specific day student concerns or activities. Day Student Council is chaired by the Day Student Coordinator and is comprised of the day students elected to the Student/Faculty Senate. Prefects Prefects are students whose character, dependability, and potential for leadership enable them to maintain positions of responsibility within the school community. They are appointed by the Dean of Students and the Assistant Head of Upper School in consultation with the Junior Class Coordinator and with the approval of the Head of Upper School and Head of School. Prefects are chosen on the basis of a written application, an interview, their involvement in the school community, their general academic performance, and their commitment to school values as demonstrated by their previous behavior. Prefects are asked to assume responsibilities in the dining room, chapel, school Post Office, and dormitories. This group of individuals is a vital link among the students, the faculty, and the administration, and strives for continued communication and understanding among these groups. Their goal is to promote the best interests of the School and the student body.
