Santa Catalina Invitational 2009

Welcome to the Santa Catalina Invitational 2009. This year marks our 53rd Annual Tournament, making us the longest running all-girls tournament in California. There are a total of 160 players participating. The dates for this year's tournament are Friday, September 11th and Saturday, September 12th, 2009.

The goal of the Santa Catalina Invitational is to provide an opportunity for young women to become better tennis players and great ambassadors for the sport.  We encourage a competitive environment and feel that sportsmanship is at the heart of the event.  We see the tournament as an opportunity for team building as well as for meeting players and coaches from other California schools. Additionally, there will be a “Sympa” award for sportsmanship given this year.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Lauren Lyssy Haase, our new tournament director. She is replacing long time director and event visionary Roy Gessford. Lauren is a USPTA professional who taught and managed tennis facilities around the world with Peter Burwash International. Lauren is currently a coach and instructor at Santa Catalina and a volunteer public school tennis instructor. Lauren lives in Carmel Valley with her husband, Bruce, who is a tennis professional and photographer, and their two children.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to host this fun-filled two-day event. We thank all the players, coaches, parents, school administrators, and sites that make this tournament possible.

Items to keep in mind for the tournament:

  1. Players need to be prepared to play both Friday and Saturday.
  2. No substituting of players is allowed.
  3. There are 6 tennis facilities used on the Monterey Peninsula to play the matches.
  4. Please be mindful of the dress code at these tennis facilities.  Traditional tennis clothing is requested.
  5. Flights played: #1 singles, #2 singles, #3 singles, #4 singles, #1 doubles, #2 doubles, #3 doubles.  Check in time and locations of play for each flight will be sent to each coach a few weeks before the tournament.

USTA rules govern play with the following adjustments:

  1. All matches are no-ad scoring.
  2. All matches, except the main draw finals on Saturday, are two sets with a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set.
  3. Players completing matches may receive up to 30 minutes prior to their next match.

Coaching Roles:

At each site, there is a site manager who is in charge. Each site manager has been notified that if there are any disputes, coaches may be asked to help out. Coaches may be asked to help with transportation. Please help if you can.

Because the sites are so spread out there will be no coaching on Friday. This is the only way to be fair to everyone. On Saturday, when only two sites are in use, Santa Catalina and Stevenson, coaching is allowed on changeovers.

The Draw:

  1. Draws are created for each flight. The #1 singles flight includes all #1 players from each school. The #2 singles flight includes all #2 singles players from each school and so forth. First round winners continue in the main draw. First round losers are placed into the consolation draw. Each player is guaranteed at least two matches.
  2. Main Draw semis will be at Santa Catalina on Saturday starting at 9:30 am.
  3. Main Draw finals will be at Santa Catalina starting not before noon.
  4. Consolation semis and finals to be at Stevenson on Saturday starting at 9:30 am.
  5. The draws are produced to ensure that players from the same schools in one flight do not meet players from those same schools in the first round in other flights. The #1 singles flight is seeded based on state ranking. All other singles flights and doubles are unseeded.

Team Scoring and Trophies:

  • A win in the main draw is worth two points.
  • A win in the back draw is worth one point.
  • Trophies will be presented to flight champions as well as team champion and team runner-up.

Although there are many factors that make a tournament work, the sites are the backbone of the tournament. Please introduce yourself and thank the host site. Let’s make it a goal to leave each site in better condition that we found them so they will invite us back next year!

Thanks for being a part of this year's tournament. If you need more information, or would like for your school to participate, please contact us.

Let’s make this year a great tournament!
