Santa Catalina Invitational 2008

Welcome to the Santa Catalina Invitational 2008.  This year marks our 52nd Annual Tournament, making us the longest running all-girls tournament in California.  The dates for this year's tournament are Friday, September 12th and Saturday, September 13th, 2008.

The goal of the Santa Catalina Invitational is to provide an opportunity for young ladies to become better tennis players and great ambassadors for the sport.  We encourage a competitive environment and feel that sportsmanship is at the heart of the event.  We see the tournament as an opportunity for team building as well as for meeting players and coaches from other California schools.  Additionally, there will be a “Sympa” award for sportsmanship given this year.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to host this fun-filled two-day event.  We thank all the players, coaches, parents, school administrators, and sites that make this tournament possible.

Here are a couple of items to keep in mind for the tournament:

  • Players need to be prepared to play both Friday and Saturday.
  • No substituting of players is allowed.

Although USTA rules govern play there are some notable exceptions:

  • All matches are no-ad scoring.
  • All matches, except main draw finals on Saturday, are two sets with a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.  This is due to time constraints.
  • A maximum of 30 minutes is allowed between matches.

The role of the coaches:

  • At each site, there is a site manager who is in charge.
  • Each site manager has been notified that if there are any challenges, coaches may be asked to help out.
  • Coaches may be asked to help with transportation.  Please help if you can.

Because the sites are so spread out there will be no coaching, even on changeovers, on Friday.  This is the only way to be fair to everyone.  On Saturday, when only two sites are in use, coaching is allowed on changeovers.

The Draw:

  • Each flight is guaranteed at least two matches.
  • The back draw or consolation is for those players that lose their first round match.
  • Main Draw semis will be at Santa Catalina on Saturday starting at 9:30 am.
  • Main Draw finals will be at Santa Catalina starting not before noon.
  • Back Draw semis and finals will be at Stevenson on Saturday starting at 9:30 am.

The draws were produced to ensure that the same schools did not meet repeatedly in the first round and that there is a balance throughout of the teams.  Only the #1 singles flight was created off of seeding information.  Trophies will be presented to flight champions as well as team champion and team runner-up.

Team Scoring:

  • A win in the main draw is worth two points.
  • A win in the back draw is worth one point.

Addiitonal links that you may find useful are: Resort 2 Me (for area accommodations) and the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce (for area attractions and information.)  Although there are many factors that make a tournament work, the sites are the backbone of the tournament.  Please introduce yourself and thank the host site.  Let’s make it a goal to leave each site in better condition that we found them so they will want to have us back next year!

Thanks for being a part of this year's tournament.  If you need more information, or would like for your school to participate, please contact Coach Forrest at her email or phone number below.

Let’s make this year a great tournament!
