On Saturday, May 26, amidst Commencement preparation in Monterey, the varsity softball team was on the way to San Jose to play in its second consecutive CCS Division III championship game. With a No. 1 seed and a 24-1-1 record, the Cougars were primed to capture the title.
The Cougars are No. 1 in CCS Division III softball.
The first three innings were slow going for Catalina, but things picked up when Fatima Larios '13 hit a single in the bottom of the fourth. The momentum continued with hits from Vanessa Furman '15, Chase LeeHong '14, Inés Borromeo '14, and Brenda Melano '15. What began as a 2–0 lead for the Soquel Knights turned into a 5–3 win for the Cougars. Despite waking up with flu-like symptoms, Alex Pingree '12 pitched all seven innings. She allowed three hits but struck out nine. She also walked two and hit one.
After a near-perfect season, the Cougars finally sealed the deal and took home the school's first CCS softball title. A bit shocked, the team's immediate reaction to victory seemed understated, but smiles prevaled as the girls gathered together for the awards ceremony.

In a rush to get back to campus for graduation, seniors Alex Pingree and Sarah Morris chatted with reporters while packing their bags. We trust that after they received their diplomas, they had time to relish their victories — both athletic and academic.
