Spread The Word About Our Open House

Spread the word about the Lower and Middle School Open House on Friday, November 10, from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. It is a great time for prospective families to tour the school, learn more about our curriculum, and hear about the admission process for students entering PreK through grade 8 in 2018–19. If you have friends who you think would like to join us, please contact Alexandra Pingree at 831.655.9337 or Janet Luksik at 831.655.9382.

Students hold Food Drive for November Service Project
In November, Santa Catalina Lower and Middle School's community service efforts benefit the Food Bank for Monterey County. We are collecting nonperishable food items for those in need over the holidays: canned meats, soups, fruits, vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, rice, cereal, grains, dried beans, and powdered milk. Food barrels will be on campus throughout the month.

In recent years, food donations from local retailers have decreased dramatically due to the growth of discount chain grocery stores. Increasingly, food banks must depend on the community's generosity to meet basic needs.

Make your donation count: Try to choose food with some nutritional value, check expiration dates, and, if possible, shop with your child and discuss what would be the best donation. We hope you participate by dropping off some of these items at your convenience.

Donate unopened Halloween candy

Please support our participation in the Halloween Candy Give-Back event. We are collecting wrapped Halloween candy from Wednesday, November 1, through Wednesday, November 8.  Working with Operation Gratitude, all candy goes to deployed U.S. military troops and first responders. Pictures or letters are also welcome and are included in the care packages.

Bring in your excess candy and send a sweet treat to the heroes who serve our country. (Please no homemade or unwrapped items.)

Watch the Film Club's Lego movie
The sixth- and seventh-grade film club screened their short Lego movie after a showing of The Lego Batman Movie at the Carmel International Film Festival on October 19. Watch it here!

Santa Catalina Fund

Pledge Now: Ends November 11

Have you made your pledge to the Santa Catalina Fund yet? There's still time. The goal is to reach 100 percent parent participation by the conclusion of the Parents' 6-week Santa Catalina Fund drive on Friday, November 11.

The race to 100 percent parent participation is still underway. Grade 3 was the first to reach 100 percent and has been awarded one week of free dress! Kindergarten has also reached 100 percent parent participation, and they've been awarded three days of free dress. Third place is still up for grabs! Keep checking the banner on the front lawn for daily updates.

For the first time, we are offering fun incentives just for the Middle School grades. The first Middle School class to reach 100 percent parent participation will win a pizza party. To continue Middle School momentum, the first advisory group to reach 100 percent parent participation will enjoy special treats. It's still any class's race!

Last year, eight Lower and Middle School classes reached 100 percent parent participation. With your thoughtful gift, in any amount, 100 percent is possible for all grades! Join your fellow parents and PLEDGE NOW. Go online or call 831.655.9379. Thank you for your kind support of our wonderful school!

Monterey Peninsula Foundation Supports Lower and Middle School Tuition Assistance

Last year, Monterey Peninsula Foundation awarded the school $225,000 in matching funds for the Lower and Middle School tuition assistance endowment. Five donors, including three foundations, exceeded the match with over $260,000 in gifts and pledges. This year we are excited to announce that we have received an additional pledge from Monterey Peninsula Foundation for $200,000 in matching funds to further benefit the Lower and Middle School tuition assistance endowment. We are already on our way to meeting the match!

Annual Benefit Celebration
The Benefit Celebration Committee met for the first time on October 10. We are delighted to announce that Jamie Roth (mom to Mackenzie in 11th grade and Grady in 4th grade) will co-chair this year's event. As we continue to focus on "community conservation," we are investigating local venues for the event.

We had a great turnout of parents at our first meeting and we are thankful for all the support we have received. Our auction committees are starting to gather live, silent, and super silent auction items. Many of our committee chairs and members are established, but we always have a need for more parent involvement. If you are able to, or know someone who can help facilitate a live auction item, we would love to hear from you. Contact Jamie Roth at 831.655.9379 or jamienstew@me.com, or fellow co-chair Sabrina Taylor at 831.332.4971 or sabrinataylor19@gmail.com.

The next Benefit Celebration Committee meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, December 5, at 8:00 a.m. in the Upper School Dining Room. We hope you are able to join us. It is a great way to meet new parents and show your support for school.
