January 13, 2018

This coming Thursday, January 18, at 7:00 pm, we will hold College Night for juniors and their parents in the Mary Johnson Recital Hall. For those who cannot attend, the event will be streamed. We will present an overview of the college admission process and the guidance students can look forward to receiving from our college counselors, Ms. Van Wagenen and Mr. White. We look forward to seeing you there!

One-on-One Appointments

Juniors are encouraged to begin making individual appointments to meet with Ms. Van Wagenen and Mr. White. This first appointment will be scheduled after our college night presentation for juniors on January 18. If you plan to visit colleges over winter break (February 23-March 4) you should try to schedule an appointment before February 23 so that we can talk about your college visits and how to maximize them.

April ACT Reminder

Because the Seaside location for the ACT will not be available again until June 9, at which time the semester will have ended, we ask that students wishing to take the ACT locally this spring sign up for April 14 ACT at the Hartnell College location in Salinas. School will provide transportation to this location only. The registration deadline is March 9, but we strongly suggest that students register as soon as possible in order to secure a slot.

Hang In There, Seniors!

Now that almost all application materials have been submitted on your behalf, continue to check your emails and portals to make sure you don't miss any messages or requests from colleges. Also, do everything you can to protect yourself against senioritis. Though colleges recognize that seniors' academic performances are apt to wobble a bit as they approach graduation, it is important that you do your level best to finish strong and not invite schools to reconsider favorable admissions decisions.

Mid-Year Reports

The mid-year report, which is a counselor form coupled with a new transcript inclusive of your first semester grades, will be sent to all of your schools that require it. After the beginning of February, if mid-year reports appear to be missing, please contact us.

Mounting UC and CSU Construction Costs

A new report by the College Futures Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes greater access to higher education, says California faces an urgent need to maintain and expand its college campuses to make room for more students and upgrade aging buildings. The urgency of the need notwithstanding, meeting it is going to require fiscal creativity on the part of the state, and a variety of options are being considered. For more on this story, see here.

Note from the UC System: Test Scores and Reports

If applicants have not yet submitted their official test scores or have questions about submitting their transcript, please keep the following in mind:

SAT and ACT test scores: Official SAT with Essay, ACT with Writing, SAT Subject Tests and TOEFL scores need to be sent to ONLY ONE campus. UC will share scores with all campuses to which a student has applied. IELTS scores, however, must be sent to each UC campus. The SAT Subject Exams are not required, but encouraged for some majors.

Official AP/IB/A-Level exam scores: Official score reports are not required until after an offer of admission is accepted; the deadline for submission is July 15. The UC campus from which a student accepts an offer of admission will provide instructions with the offer of admission.

Transcripts: Do not submit official transcripts at this time unless a UC campus specifically requests them.
