Volunteer for your children—volunteer for art!

The art studio has been filled with fun, enthusiasm, and creative energy, and the children are excited to share what they've been creating in our upcoming Spring Art Salon. Will you help us?

Spring Art Salon Rosie the Riveter

Since 1992, our annual art exhibition has been a celebration of our children's creative spirit as seen in the artwork of students in Kindergarten through grade 8. From its humble beginning as a one-night show, the idea has extended to an ongoing salon-style exhibition with artwork displayed floor-to-ceiling and on every available inch in the large Assembly Room and adjacent hallway gallery. Parent art volunteers have been an essential part of this creative endeavor as they help to organize displays and install the artwork for exhibition.

This is your chance to give back to your school community while supporting your child's creativity and the arts. Preparation sessions will be held in the art studio March 19–April 24. Installation of the Art Salon will be April 30 and May 1–4. There's much you can do even if you only have an hour to spare.

To volunteer, please see this Art Salon Preparation and Installation Calendar for dates and times, stop by the art studio, or contact art teacher Susan Smith at susan.smith@santacatalina.org.

Class projects keep campus busy

The Assembly Room was a hive of activity as students from different grade levels presented their class projects.

  • Grade 7 held their first Architecture Fair on March 7. Students researched and built models of famous buildings from all around the world dating to the time period they cover in their history class, 500-1600 CE. See photos.
  • Grade 2 presented their Entrepreneur Fair on March 12, where businesses ranged from pet shops and toy stores to gymnastics lessons and legal services. See photos.

Eat pizza, fund a field trip!

California Pizza Kitchen at Del Monte Shopping Center is sponsoring a fundraiser on behalf of Grade 7's Catalina Island field trip. Eat at the restaurant anytime on Tuesday, March 20, and show or mention this flyer to send 20 percent of sales to the students. Help us lower the price of the trip for our seventh-grade families!

Thanks for service projects

We wanted to pass on some thank-you notes we received from organizations you have supported through various service projects. The Food Bank for Monterey County gave their thanks for Catalina's part in collecting over 140,000 pounds of food during their holiday food drive. The Read to Me Project told us that your book donations are in the hands of 3,000 student readers and young siblings. Noting the donation of books for PreK-grade 1 children, they said: "It is wonderful to have books like this to make available to families who would otherwise not have books in their homes." You can read some of the thank-you cards sent by kids in the Read to Me Project by clicking the images.
