Who We Are
Greetings from the Head of School
I have been fortunate to visit many schools and college campuses around the U.S. and Asia, and I found that my initial and unfiltered reactions to the people I met were often very telling. It wasn’t so long ago that I, like you, discovered Santa Catalina School and went for a visit. Walking the beautiful campus, I was welcomed with warm smiles and greetings from students and staff alike. I thought I would share some of what I learned then, and now know, about this wonderful place. You will be visiting an independent school in its seventh decade of providing a rigorous and meaningful education to young people. It is a school with a long-standing tradition ensuring outstanding academic achievement, and one where students find their path to meaning and purpose in their lives. Some of what is uniquely wonderful about this place you will find on this website, but much, much more can only be experienced in person.
Your experience will include time meeting motivated, creative boys and girls who value kindness. You will find passionate and accomplished educators, who know their students well, teaching an inquiry-based curriculum in contemporary classrooms, libraries, and performing and visual arts spaces. Most importantly I hope you will observe the character-education program, Compass, and the creative problem-solving and exploration taking place in every classroom.
Students must have the skills and knowledge to face both the enormous challenges and unimaginable opportunities of an endlessly changing and malleable world landscape. It struck me, and I believe you will see this too, that Santa Catalina creatively prepares students for just such a future. Even as education changes—our core values do not. A well-developed moral compass, founded in deep-seated, personal convictions along with the integrity to uphold them, is part of every day at Santa Catalina. As the school’s patron saint, Catherine of Siena, said, “Do not be satisfied with little things, because God wants great things!”
I invite you to discover the many incredible opportunities that Santa Catalina School has to offer you, and I look forward to meeting you then.
