Santa Catalina Lower and Middle School students participated in the state Mathcounts competition for the second year in a row.
The team of four eighth graders qualified for state after coming out on top at the Monterey Bay area contest on February 3. In that competition, Catalina students also won individual awards. Ethan, an eighth grader and a member of the winning team, placed first in the Sprint and Countdown rounds. David, in seventh grade, finished second in the Countdown Round. A total of eight Catalina students in grades 6–8 participated in the chapter competition.
Mathcounts is a national middle school mathematics competition that builds problem solving skills and fosters achievement through “bee” style contests.
The state competition was held in San Jose on March 23 and involved about 200 students from the Northern California region.
