Library donates 1,000 books to schools in Philippines

Santa Catalina School is donating nearly 1,000 books from the library to help schools in the Philippines start libraries of their own.

The Sister Mary Kieran Library, used by Middle School students, contains more than 22,000 unique works of fiction and nonfiction. For the past few months, library assistant AnaCena Zander has sifted through the collection and separated out books that are outdated or slightly damaged, a regular process for libraries. Any books that were still in good condition and that would continue to enhance student knowledge and educational growth were earmarked for donation.

Board of Trustees member Dito Borromeo, a past Catalina parent who is from the Philippines and works closely with the schools there, helped facilitate the project along with Head of School Meg Bradley.

The books will become the start of a library collection for schools that currently have no reading materials. They include a mix of fiction, literature, encyclopedias, and nonfiction focusing on world religions, language, emotional and physical health, and environmental science.

"We hope to continue this great partnership as our library collection becomes more up-to-date," Zander said.

Anyone wishing to contribute to future donations can drop off books at the front gate or email the library at scslibrary@santacatalina.org.
