Middle School math students tackle engineering challenges

Santa Catalina Middle School students solved a variety of engineering problems during the Mathcounts program’s Engineers Week from February 20-24.

The students tackled problems from five different fields: aerospace, civil, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering. Students who correctly solved the problems were recognized as “Future Engineers with Honors” on the Mathcounts website.

Students worked in teams or as individuals to solve the problems, which included doing calculations related to a truss bridge, solving ciphers, and creating and modifying paper airplanes. In the process, they made use of skills such as proportional reasoning, logic, and problem solving.
