Santa Catalina Lower and Middle School eighth-graders graduated under a crystal clear blue sky on June 4.
With face masks the only indication the ceremony was unfolding in an unusual year, the 71st Annual Commencement Exercises celebrated the incredible Class of 2021 and ushered them into the next phase of their lives.
Student speakers Piper Butler and Savannah Hardy each highlighted the family of friends who grew up around them and the resilience of their classmates through nearly a full year of distance learning. As Savannah said, "We survived, and now we are thriving."
The keynote speaker was parent and trustee Dr. Kenneth Peyton, who offered eight pieces of advice for the graduates as they head to high school: don't be afraid to meet new people, engage with your teachers, lean on your parents, be nice, be OK with failure, say "no," challenge yourself, and have faith in yourself.
We can't wait to see what these amazing students do next.
