Three students advance to state in Mathcounts

Three Catalina Cougars will participate in the California Mathcounts Competition on May 31.

Eighth-graders Wyatt and Antonio and seventh-grader Emily were ranked among the top five scorers in the Monterey Bay Chapter Competition on February 17. Wyatt and Antonio placed 5th and 4th, respectively, and Emily placed 2nd, qualifying them for the state contest.

The Mathcounts Competition Series is a national middle school mathematics competition that builds problem-solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, “bee” style contests. In response to COVID-19, this year the contests were held online.

The chapter competition included the top chosen math students from various schools in and around Monterey County. The top four scorers in the state contest advance to nationals in May.

Each contest has four rounds and is designed to take about three hours to complete.
