School start delayed 1 week due to fires

August 22, 2020

Dear Santa Catalina Families,

We are closely monitoring the current fire activity and evacuation orders and will communicate any local developments with our parents and students to keep you informed. Below, please find important updates from Christy Pollacci and Julie Edson regarding orientation and classes.

An update from Christy Pollacci, Head of Lower and Middle School
In light of the devastating fires in our area, and given that 10 of our teachers and their families and 40 Lower and Middle School families are under evacuation orders, we will postpone orientation conferences for one week. Both in-person and Zoom conferences will take place at the originally scheduled time, but now during the week of August 31. The first day of classes in the Lower and Middle School will be Tuesday, September 8. We recognize this may be disruptive, but we trust you understand that this decision is most necessary.

An update from Julie Lenherr Edson '88, Head of Upper School
At this time, we plan to continue with the opening of school next week. Orientation activities will proceed as planned on Monday, August 24, and Tuesday, August 25. Classes will begin on Wednesday, August 26. Please contact me at if your family has been evacuated or anticipates being evacuated. We wish to offer support to any students who may experience disruptions in attending classes or completing assignments due to the fires. If the fires and evacuation orders expand to an extent that impacts larger numbers of our faculty and the families in our community, it may be necessary to delay the start of school in the Upper School as well.

Please keep our firefighters and our Catalina community in mind as together we pray for the safety of all.

Meg Bradley
Head of School
