Paul Elliott, the chair of physical education for PreK-12, has received Santa Catalina School's 2020 Sister Carlotta Distinguished Service Award.
The award is the highest honor a faculty or staff member can receive from the school. It is presented each year to those whose work, either inside or outside the classroom, has epitomized the school's mission and has enriched the hearts and minds of students at Santa Catalina.
"It was humbling, I'll say that," Elliott said of receiving the award. "What an honor. I was very grateful for it."
The announcement was made during a special ceremony over Zoom on August 21. Head of School Meg Bradley said, "Paul is always stretching and learning and adapting, and as a colleague you can count on him. ... He is passionate about developing character in our students, always encouraging each child to do his or her best and to always be a good sport in wins or losses."
In nominating Elliott for the award, one of his colleagues wrote: "The kids love him. They feel his excitement and then they get excited and it just creates a snowball of positive energy. Paul engages with the entire student community no matter how small or how tall. He offers a playful and positive connection."
In addition to teaching Lower and Middle School students, Elliott is the Upper School athletic director, head volleyball coach, assistant coach for basketball and softball, and a member of the schoolwide Health and Wellness Committee.
