Seventh-grader wins Middle School spelling bee

Seventh-grader Katie Noble will represent Santa Catalina Lower and Middle School at the Countywide Spelling Bee on March 3.

For the second year in a row, Katie came out on top in the school competition, which featured three students each from grades 6, 7, and 8. Ava Edwards (Grade 6), Savannah Hardy (Grade 6), and Emma Kim (Grade 7) took second, third, and fourth, respectively.

The contest was light-hearted from the start, when the first word, "pizza," drew chuckles from the audience. Other words that tickled the funny bone were "nuggets" and "sapsucker."

Contestants nailed every word in the first two rounds, then began dropping out on words such as "rookie," "mull," and "widespread." Katie and Ava went three rounds one-on-on; Katie won with the word "garbled."

Congrats to all of our participants:

Ava Edwards (Grade 6)

Katie Noble (Grade 7)
Sophie Henrard (Grade 7)
Emma Kim (Grade 7)
