Valentine's Day at Santa Catalina Lower and Middle School was all about sending love to people in our community and beyond.
After an Ash Wednesday service, Compass groups gathered together to make "pocket hearts" as an expression of support and kinship to the victims of the Thomas Fire and subsequent devastating mud slides in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties this winter. Students made small clay hearts and signed cards reading "From our hearts to yours." The hearts and cards were placed into baggies to be sent to the Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara, a prominent resource and disaster services center.
The day before, first-graders visited The Park Lane senior living facility to make cupcakes with their resident buddies. After the students and their friends each enjoyed a cupcake, the rest were donated to Safe Place, a program that offers shelter, food, counseling, and other services to at-risk runaway and homeless youth.
