Sports Roundup: Week of October 14

Santa Catalina's varsity field hockey team emerged victorious with a 1-0 win against Salinas. Olivia DaSilva ’25 scored on an assist from Kali Peck ’28. The standout performance came from goalkeeper Sofia McHugh ’25, who achieved her fourth shutout of the season. The Cougars continued their winning streak with a solid 2-0 victory against Monterey. Piper Butler ’25 opened the scoring and assisted on the second goal, while Jayla Ballesteros ’26 celebrated her first goal of the season. Olivia also contributed with an assist.

In volleyball, JV faced a tough challenge against Carmel, falling short in a competitive match. Bella Cowart-Kadleck ’28 led the effort with 4 kills and an ace, while Chloe Wigdahl ’28 contributed 5 aces. Sarah Schuerer ’28 also made her mark with 3 aces and 8 assists. The team bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Carmel. Bella contributed significantly with 3 aces and a kill, while Linda Pacheco ’27 added 2 kills and an ace. Sarah’s 6 assists and 2 aces were pivotal in the team's success.

Varsity volleyball faced a tough opponent in Carmel, losing in straight sets. Despite the setback, Ansley Brosseau ’27 stood out with 17 assists and 12 digs. Kristen Wong ’27 contributed 8 kills and 7 digs, while Evelyn Kim ’27 had a strong defensive game with 18 digs and 4 aces.

Varsity tennis narrowly lost to Stevenson. Jessica Urtusuastegui ’27 shined with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory, while the doubles pair of Magdalena Pablos '27 and Chloe Thompson '27 also cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Hannah Brown ’25 and Maria Amelia Artola ’25 secured a win with a close 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 finish.

JV tennis delivered a strong performance against Stevenson, winning 6-1. Jojo Castro ’26 showed tenacity, overcoming a second-set deficit to claim victory. Valentina Jauregui Moreno ’27 and Regina De Alba ’28 adapted well to aggressive net play, winning their match in straight sets. Sophomore Julia Seldner’s control from the baseline also contributed to the team’s success.

The golf team narrowly lost to Carmel. Medalist Candy Liu ’28 shot an impressive 36, leading the charge for Catalina, while Anika Minami ’28 added a solid 43. Sofia Quinonez ’26 and Nancy Ma ’26 also performed well, shooting 44 and 47, respectively. The team followed with a win over Pacific Grove, 226-301. Candy led the charge with a 40, closely followed by Anika’s 41.

Varsity water polo triumphed over Carmel with a convincing 13-4 win. Quinn Connolly ’26 led the scoring with six goals, supported by three goals from Allie Fieber ’25 and and in impressive 12 saves by Emme Adamski ’27.
