Sports Roundup: Week of September 30

Santa Catalina School athletes had a banner week, with nine overall wins and impressive performances.

The varsity golf team secured two more wins this week. The Cougars defeated Salinas High School 219-248, with Candy Liu ’28, Sofia Quinonez ’26, and Samantha Chun ’27 each shooting rounds of 42. Anika Minami ’28 followed closely with a 44, while Suhana Dail ’26 and Natalie Powell ’25 rounded out the team with scores of 49 and 54, respectively. In their 224-254 victory over Monte Vista Christian, Candy led the charge with an outstanding round of 38. Sofia contributed a solid 40, and Anika followed closely with a 41.

JV volleyball showcased their talent with two wins. In their 2-0 win over North Monterey County, Sarah Schuerer ’28 recorded 12 assists, 9 aces, and 1 kill. Chloe Wigdahl ’28 also shined, contributing 5 kills and 3 aces, while Bella Cowart-Kadleck ’28 added 3 kills and an ace. Following that success, the team faced King City, earning a 2-1 victory. Sarah once again played a pivotal role, providing 9 assists along with 1 kill and 1 ace. Both Chloe and Lydia Ostos ’28 notched 4 kills, with Chloe adding another ace.

Varsity volleyball secured a decisive 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-18, 25-15) against North Monterey County. Ansley Brosseau ’27 dished out an impressive 24 assists along with 4 kills. Aleasha Kalinski ’25 shone brightly with 9 kills, while both Kristen Wong ’27 and Grace Henrard ’26 added 5 kills each. The team then faced a challenging match against Stevenson, falling 0-3 (20-25, 11-25, 16-25). Despite the loss, Ansley delivered a strong performance with 3 kills, 7 digs, and 20 assists. Aleasha also made her mark with 5 kills and 2 blocks, while Evelyn Kim ’27 contributed 7 digs and 2 aces.

Catalina field hockey faced a challenging match against Carmel, falling 1-3. Piper Butler ’25 found the back of the net for Catalina, with Olivia DaSilva ’25 providing the assist. Sofia McHugh ’25 recorded 14 saves.

The JV tennis team secured a 5-0 victory against Hollister. Magdalena Pablos ’27 and Julia Seldner ’27 won 8-0, while Fer Espinosa ’26 and Jojo Castro ’26 won 8-1. Monica Ortega ’26 and Regina de Alba ’28 also won decisively, defeating their opponents 8-1. Valentina Juaregui ’27 and Ana Capote ’28 added to the sweep with an 8-2 victory, and Teresa Jiang ’28 and Cynthia Qiu ’28 capped it off with an 8-5 win.

The varsity tennis team secured a 4-3 victory against Carmel. Gloria Arastoupour ’26 set the tone with a 6-2, 6-0 win, while Aspasia Elorduy ’26 secured her match with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 score. Jessica Urtusuastegui ’27 had a comeback win of 2-6, 6-3 (11-9). In doubles, Fiona Fang ’28 and Averie Nguyen ’25 dominated their opponents, winning 6-2, 6-0. Maria Amelia Artola ’25 and Magdalena Pablos ’27 lost a close match 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), and Julia Seldner ’27 and Fer Espinosa ’26 fell 0-6, 2-6. The team’s overall effort secured the hard-earned win.

Catalina had a commanding 7-0 victory over Hollister. Gloria again led the charge with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Also securing wins were Aspa (6-2, 6-2), Yunah Baek ’26 (6-2, 6-3), and Jessica Urtusuastegui ’27 (6-1, 6-0). In doubles, Fiona and Averie continued their dominance with a 6-0, 6-4 victory, and Maria and Analu Barron ’25 fought hard for a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 win. Hannah Brown  ’25 and Luisa Batiz ’27 capped off the sweep with a thrilling 1-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory, solidifying Catalina's impressive performance this season.

Water polo emerged victorious against Pacific Grove High School with a score of 12-10. Quinn ’26 and Taylor Connolly ’28 each netted 4 goals while contributing 4 steals apiece. Emme Adamski ’27 had 8 saves while Allie Fieber ’25 contributed 3 goals.
