Seven students win awards in Scholastic Art & Writing contest

Seven Santa Catalina School students received recognition in the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional competition.

Three students received Gold Key awards, the top prize: Sophie Knipp ’25 for painting, Judy Zou ’24 for sculpture, and Anna Yeh ’23 for critical essay. All three entries will automatically go on to national judging.

In all, students received 14 awards in the contest. Here is the full list of winners:

Miriam Riley ’23 — Art Portfolio, “Lonely Places” and Photography, “Our Beach”
Riley Yates ’23 — Photography, “Boston: Old & New”

Louisa Shen ’24 — Digital Art, “The Shark City”
Riley Yates ’23 — Art Portfolio, “All Ears”
Anna Yeh ’23 — Drawing & Illustration, “Forced Closure” and Short Story, “Wishing Bottles”

The California Central Coast Art Region is the largest and most competitive in the country, with 25 counties stretching from Monterey County in the south to Napa in the north and across the width of the state.
