Students earn end-of-year art honors

Santa Catalina School art students are finishing the school year strong in a range of local contests.

Weston Scholarship
Four juniors earned awards at the Weston Collective Scholarship portfolio competition, which celebrates digital and film-printed black-and-white photography.

Maya Touché won first place and $350 in the Chapman High School Category. Honorable mentions went to Analu Barron Bours and Grace Ge. Averie Nguyen won third place and a $300 prize in the Center for Photographic Art Social Commentary Category.

This annual contest draws entries from high school and community college students in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. This year’s contest received 71 portfolios, of which 23 were selected for exhibition.

Congressional Art Competition
Jasmine Choi ’25 earned honorable mention in this regional contest open to students in Rep. Jimmy Panetta’s 19th Congressional District. Her painting of Santa Catalina’s Hacienda was recognized in the Landscape category.

Ocean Arts Festival
Elle Edwards ’24 was chosen to show two videos in this ocean-themed art show for young artists. The goal of the festival is to “celebrate the power of creativity to deepen understanding of the ocean and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.” Elle’s videos capture a Big Sur road trip and the Senior Sunrise outing at Del Monte Beach.
