Basketball preview: Young team hungry to improve

The Carmel Pine Cone recently previewed Santa Catalina School's basketball season and the promise of a young team.

The team is made up of nine freshmen, two sophomores, and one senior. New head coach Peter Cofresi and Athletic Director Paul Elliott are excited about the prospect of working with the same group of girls for three or four years. Cofresi told the Pine Cone, "I like this situation. They're all just getting to know each other as teammates, which also makes this a good time for me to get to know them. We're building a chemistry together."

Among the Cougars highlighted were shooting guard Maddy Foletta '22, the team's leading scorer; Liliana Pedroni '23, an experienced player who has stepped into the point guard position; power forward Selma Ruiz '23, one of the team's best rebounders; and forward Kate Romans '23, a leftie who can score from 3-point range.

The Cougars compete in the Santa Lucia Division of the Pacific Coast Athletic League. They open the regular season on January 8 with a game at Monterey. Their first home game is January 14 vs. Gonzales.
