Short films expose students to global issues

Santa Catalina students heard two perspectives on Europe's refugee crisis and the story of a Nigerian woman who escaped captivity under Boko Haram in three short films presented November 1 as a preview to the 18th annual International Documentary Film Festival at CSU Monterey Bay.

The three films—Irregulars, 4.1 Miles, and Child, Bride, Mother: Nigeria—were interspersed with reflections by Peace and Justice students Victoria Gorum '19, Sarah Ning '18, and Rowan Azhderian '18. Coco Wang '18 also spoke about fair trade.

Victoria later introduced Child, Bride, Mother at the festival itself, hosted by the Monterey Bay Chapter of the United Nations Association from November 3-4. Other Peace and Justice students volunteered at the event to welcome guests. Santa Catalina is a sponsor.

The film festival preview is an annual event that exposes students to different cultures and issues of concern throughout the world.
