The forecast warned of cloudy skies in Monterey, but Santa Catalina teachers turned their eyes skyward anyway in hopes of catching a glimpse of the great solar eclipse of 2017.
Alas, the phenomenon was obscured by gray, but a slight darkening of the sky and a drop in temperature gave indications that Monterey's 71 percent piece of the sun-moon pie did in fact occur.
Live streams of the eclipse in totality helped ease the pain.
