Classes


There is so much to do at Summer at Santa Catalina. We offer nearly 50 classes that spark curiosity and build confidence and independence.

There are six class periods per day. Some classes last one period, and others are two or three periods.

  • Half-day options include Math, Musical Theatre Workshop, Riding/Horsemanship, and Surfing.
  • Advanced Black-and-White Photography, Golf, and Earth to Sea are two-period classes.
  • All other classes are a single period of learning and laughter.
     
Anna and Elsa

5-week session

At the end of our 5-week option, campers participating in our Musical Theatre Workshop and Theatre Tech Workshop show off their hard work in an amazing full-scale production. With only five weeks to produce the show, it is a true testament to the hard work and talent of the campers on stage and off.

Five-week campers have the opportunity to sign up for two sets of classes: one set for the first two weeks and another set for the final three weeks.

Grades 3-6

COOKING

Petite Baker (3-week only) – NEW!

Let’s get baking! In this class campers learn how to read recipes, measure, assemble mis en place, and prepare scrumptious baked goods while learning how to taste and adjust for flavor. Campers learn basic kitchen skills to make cooking safe and easy. They also explore baking chemistry and spices to create new and exciting flavors. Most importantly, there is much fun learning the joy of baking, sharing, and eating!

Petite Chefs (2-week only)

Let’s get cooking! In this class campers learn how to read recipes, measure, assemble mis en place, and prepare delicious food while learning how to taste and adjust for flavor. Campers learn basic knife skills to make cooking safe and easy. They also explore herbs and spices to create new and exciting flavors. Most importantly, there is much fun learning the joy of cooking, sharing, and eating!
 

DANCE

Contemporary – Performance Class – NEW!

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several genres, including modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Join us to learn fundamentals such as barre work, across the floor, and vocabulary, or improve the performance background you already have! Campers learn a full dance to perform at the end of their session to show off their accomplishments.

Hip-Hop – Performance Class

Have a blast in hip-hop class! Campers learn a selection of dance moves and hip-hop styles and then put the moves together in a dance to be performed on stage at the close of camp.

Jazz – Performance Class

Ready for some high-energy dancing? Whether campers bring their jazz shoes or jazz hands, they kick off the summer with fun music and great choreography. A lively and vigorous dance performance is the end project, performed at closing day. Expect finger snapping and plenty of toe tapping from the audience.
 

PHOTOGRAPHY

3D Printing and Designing – NEW

Learn about 3D printing and the rapid prototype process. Visit a makerspace! Use calipers and a CAD (computer assisted design) program to convert a digital image into a lithophane, then engineer a custom nightlight to take home. Create your own 3D-printed cartoon character. Write an inspirational message to 3D print into a keychain or make a magnet for your fridge. Take an idea and create a 3-dimensional prototype. Learn different ways to finish the 3D print. And share your art and engineering capabilities!

Digital Photography

Do you love taking pictures? Is it a favorite thing to do? If yes, then this is the class to take! Spend summer exploring the beautiful gardens on campus, taking photographs of flowers, trees, and architecture. Learn how to use the computer to enhance, manipulate, and print pictures. The possibilities are endless! Bring a point-and-shoot digital camera and a 16GB thumb drive.
 

OUTDOOR EXPLORATION

Earth to Sea

Explore the beautiful Monterey Peninsula from the mighty redwood to the ocean shoreline when marine biology meets outdoor explorer in this two-period class. This is a fun and fantastic class that entertains and teaches at the tide pool and the flower field. Classroom days are spent with activities, crafts, and nature games as a way to introduce not only the flora and fauna that share our coastal home but the beasties, including the outrageous otter and the creepy crab. Bring sunscreen and a day pack because this is “surf-to-turf” field studies.
 

SCIENCE

Cool Chemistry – NEW!

What makes pop rocks pop? What makes gummy worms gummy? It’s chemistry! There is cool chemistry all around us and we will discover it by doing experiments with munchies. We will make and test hypotheses and then eat the results using yummy, edible chemistry. Come explore the world of molecules!
 

SPORTS

Kick it Up – NEW!

Dribbling, passing, shooting—campers learn soccer fundamentals and kick up their skill level with scrimmages and small tournaments. Whether they are new to soccer or are experts, this class is about gaining leadership skills while being active and playing a fun sport.
 

TECHNOLOGY

HatchQuest

This class is your chance to venture into the world of game making using your artistic and storytelling skills to build your own role-playing card game. Serious art-doodling skills are required ... actually, scratch that, you only need your enthusiasm! Using the HatchQuest game design program, campers work through all phases of role-playing game development. From concept to finish, create game characters by drawing their images, assigning abilities, and writing an epic adventure story, complete with quest maps. Lots of laughs included.

 

THEATRE ARTS & MUSIC

Glee Club / Show Choir – Performance Class

Calling all young performers to sing and dance with friends old and new! In this class, campers learn the fundamentals of ensemble performance. Give life and expression to favorite songs while moving around the stage to entertain friends and family at the closing performance.

Ready, Set, Act! – Performance Class

What does it take to act? Body exercises, games, voice projection, and improvisation are used to challenge the imagination and focus observation. Being on stage is all about teamwork and overcoming inhibition. Taught by a professional actor and theatrical performer, this class is a young actress’s best choice!

Ukulele – Performance Class – Back by Popular Demand!

There is nothing like singing and playing music with friends. This summer, learn about the ukulele and take up the little instrument with a big voice! This class gives you a chance to learn about chords, melody, and strumming. Be apart of the soundtrack of camp and learn how to play our very own camp song on the ukulele! This is a performance class and you must be present to perform at the Closing Day show! Aloha!

 

VISUAL ARTS

Collage Creative Journaling – NEW!

Get creative in this epic collage class! Create your own collage journal while also learning how to incorporate and unify works of collage art. Learn glue techniques, ageing with paint, and how to include different kinds of textures. Come  explore a variety of methods to create color such as pastels and watercolor. Each camper leaves with their own creative journal!

Into the Studio: Japanese Artmaking – NEW!

Come learn three Japanese art techniques: Suminagashi, Shibori, and woodblock carving. Suminagashi is the ancient Japanese process of marbling plain paper with water and ink. Learn how to make beautiful colored ink paintings on floating pieces of paper! In the Shibori dye workshop, you learn the basics of indigo dyeing using Shibori fold techniques to make amazing contrasted blue-and-white patterning on cotton cloth. Finally, inspired by Japanese woodblock carving, design and carve your own lino block and discover the use of colored inks for your own unique printing style.

Spatial Sculpture – New projects!

Use your hands as we evolve our art from 2D to 3D. We investigate moving a drawing to an object while creating various sculptures, beginning with wire and finally putting together an original assemblage sculpture from recycled materials! As you move along your sculpture journey, look at how different artists such as Ruth Asawa and Robert Rauschenberg made their own sculpture discoveries. Space is the final frontier!

Mix and Match Crafts! – NEW

This craft session includes a spectrum of color crafts including soap making, candle making, color bubble prints, tie-dye creations, and many other fun and colorful projects. Experiment with your favorite colors and create something entirely new to you!

We Ceramics — New projects!

Get messy, get creative, and learn the ancient art of ceramics! Working with clay, campers make wall planters, pebble pots, wind chimes and more. Add exciting texture to pieces with tools, twigs, and nature. Then, glaze the projects and give wild personality to the creations.
 

YOGA

Yoga and Meditation

Learn poses that can help develop a strong and healthy body, relax and cope with the stress of life, increase concentration and attention span, have greater self-confidence, and have fun—all at the same time? Whether you already practice yoga or are eager to find out what it is all about, this class is the perfect choice. Yoga is a method of exercising the body, mind, and soul. Campers learn breathing techniques and practice movements that help them achieve a lifelong foundation of well-being.

Grades 7-9

COOKING

Master Bakers (3-week only) – NEW!

DANCE

MATH

Count Me In!

Make math your path and learn to love Algebra! Group learning includes cooperation, fun activities, and projects that make math interesting, exciting, and accessible. In this class, you use technology (graphing calculator, computer, and iPad are provided) as well as “old school” pencil and paper to get you ready for Algebra 1 or to reinforce those Algebra 1 skills you may already possess. Let math inspire you and multiply your opportunities at school next year!

Math Power

It may be summer but it is also a great time to heat up those skills that make math so much easier in the fall. This is a great way to spend a little of your camp time getting ready to connect with high school mathematics or just skill build by practicing fractions, percentages, order of operations, negative numbers, word problems, linear equations, statistics, graphs, sequences, proportions, and probability.
 

PHOTOGRAPHY

3D Printing and Designing – NEW

Black-and-White Photography: Open Darkroom

A 50-minute period for budding photographers in the style of Weston, Steichen, and Cunningham, gives campers an additional opportunity to finish up their black and white photo projects with more dark room time. For the camper who has taken a black and white photography class and can use a dark room independently, this class provides time to print personal work. Please note this is not an instructional class, although the teacher is near by to cheer on campers.

Black-and-White Photography: On the Road

Get ready for the best summer as you field trip around the peninsula and capture the beauty and unexpected world around you on film! This is a two-period class where campers learn advanced skills about composition, design, and how to use “their creative voice.” Bring a 35mm film camera and a binder. Binders can be purchased at the camp store. Digital cameras cannot be used.

Mix It Up with Digital Photography – NEW

Use a digital camera to capture images, then try out different ways of printing and experimenting with those images! Use Photoshop to create a digital negative, then make a cyanotype image! Learn how to turn your photo into a coloring book page! Get professional and learn to use a photo booth and lights to photo-document objects, flowers, and more. Experiment with Photoshop techniques and print out your camp experiences.

 

SCIENCE

Marine Biology

Ready to dive into the world of marine habitats and explore the creatures that live there? Campers will embark on field trips to the rocky shores and tide pools of the Pacific Ocean to observe and learn about animal and plant life. They study the coastal giant kelp on a kayaking trip during which they encounter nature at its best: seals, sea lions, otters, and birds. Campers also have the opportunity to integrate the class with field study and an afternoon of snorkeling.

Edible Chemistry (3-week only) – NEW!

Edible Chemistry is a feast of exploration! Examine the molecules that make up food and how these molecules change when they are heated, cooled, pickled, mixed, or popped. Did you ever wonder what makes jelly gel, what makes pop rocks pop, or what carrageenan is and why it's in your food? Make and test hypotheses and then eat the results in this yummy blend of science and food.

SPORTS

Learn how to become an entrepreneur and innovate your school by exploring the awesome art of building a startup company! Learn about ideation, design thinking, teamwork, communication, and project planning. Leave with an inspiring startup business plan to serve others and help make the world a better place!

 

THEATRE ARTS & MUSIC

Act, Improv, Perform - Performance Class

Taught by a professional actor and theatrical performer, this exciting and interactive class builds on the storytelling skills of the young actor. Using improvisation techniques, students exercise and use their imagination. Campers perform scene work in class while learning how to take stage direction and work collaboratively with others.

Glee Club / Show Choir – Performance Class

Glee clubs have been around forever! Come sing and dance to exciting contemporary pop songs as well as the golden oldies. In this ensemble class, the focus is on group harmonization and the marriage of voice and movement in joyful and exuberant club performances.

Theatre Tech Workshop (3-week only)

What happens behind the scenes of a musical production before the show can go on? In this fun and interactive morning workshop, campers learn about set design, props, sound, and lighting on the set of a 500-seat theater. They then put their knowledge and skills to work in providing the technical assistance during the musical production of Disney’s Frozen, Jr. Here’s a great opportunity to be a techie!

AQUATICS

Dive into Summer

Whether campers have no diving experience or are an accomplished diver, it’s an opportunity to enjoy improving their skills on the three boards. The experienced diving staff will work with each camper so that she learns and practices new skills at her own pace. Divers support one another in an environment that is both exciting and rewarding.

Pool Games — New games!

Our state-of-the-art pool is the venue for a wide variety of aquatic games for campers of all ages. Activities will include inner-tube water polo and underwater hockey, crazy relays, noodle freeze-tag, and individual and group challenges. What could be better than afternoons with camp friends in the pool?
 

EQUESTRIAN

Riding / Horsemanship

Campers are instructed in all phases of horsemanship, including practical stable management and grooming, vaulting, and jumping at the newly renovated Pebble Beach Equestrian Center. The instructors strive to teach each girl to ride with safety, skill, and control. This program meets for 2 ½ hours each day, either morning or afternoon, Monday through Friday. All riders participate in a horse show for family and friends on the Friday before their camp session ends.
 

SCIENCE

Makerspace Magic

Where can you design and build an electric guitar out of cardboard, aluminum foil, and a computer? Or fuse recycled plastic bags into a pencil pouch? What about building a robot to write your name? In the Santa Catalina Summer Camp Makerspace! Learn new skills such as woodworking, coding, sewing, building electrical circuits, design, and more. Each day in the Makerspace there are new challenges, new tools, and new materials to explore, and you get to choose your adventure. Polish your STEM skills while building your confidence—become an innovator to create things that will change the world in the Makerspace.
 

SPORTS

Fit, Fab, Fun!

Throughout the course, campers are introduced to new and exciting forms of fitness activities. Girls will get to find the kind of fitness that inspires them to build healthy habits and continue to grow into strong young women. Each session builds motor skills and encourages physical activity. Build camaraderie, run around, and enjoy the outdoors, while competing and having fun!

Golf

Golf is that much better with world-renown instruction at a world-renown location—Pebble Beach Golf Academy. What a great opportunity to learn from a golf professional! Lessons are for all levels of golfers. Topics covered are long game, short game, course management, rules, and golf etiquette. With access to a personalized video analysis of the camper’s golf swing, they’ll go home with more than the swing of a fantastic sport. This same system is used by the PGA.

Surfing...Beyond the Board

Jump freely into the surfing culture of respect, integrity, and confidence in the surfing clinic led by The Wahine Project. Learn to navigate the waves and conquer inhibition in the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Boogie board, surf, and learn to call the ocean and your camp mates, “Sister!”

Please read the following descriptions carefully to determine the appropriate placement of your camper in the tennis and volleyball programs.

Tennis

We are offering tennis clinics from the Kim Grant Tennis Academy this summer—that means world-class tennis coaches! Classes take place at Santa Catalina based on age and skill level, with the court size and type of ball adjusted per age group. The class includes learning the game and tennis skills, structure games, point/match play, and fitness/agility training. This class is definitely SERIOUS FUN. Volleyball: Beginner

This is a fun class that introduces campers to the basic skills of volleyball. It is perfect for campers who have no prior experience playing volleyball, or have never touched a ball. We work on basic passing, serving, and setting in a welcoming and energetic environment. This class is designed to teach and train volleyball fundamentals for beginners and those with some introductory experience.

Volleyball: Intermediate/Advanced

Work on continuing to improve your volleyball fundamental skills. This class is designed to help campers better their control of the ball through lively progressions, drills, and games. Some volleyball experience is required, such as experience in gym class or playing on a team during the year.
 

THEATRE ARTS & MUSIC

Musical Theatre Workshop — New production!
(5-week only) – Performance Class

Calling all 5-week campers! Disney’s Frozen, Jr. finds a home at summer camp. Every weekday morning, 9 a.m. to noon, students rehearse on stage. Director Roger Thompson is joined by a professional choreographer to stage this favorite musical. Together they provide instruction on the techniques of stage presence, acting, singing, and dancing. Join us on Closing Day for Disney’s Frozen, Jr. as we walk, sing, and dance into the exciting world of Elsa and Anna and their adventures!

VISUAL ARTS

Cross Stitch (2-week only) – NEW!

Cross-stitch is a fun and easy craft to learn, and the colorful results are beautiful. In this class, creative stitchers start cross-stitching simple patterns to keep or to share. With some patterns, students can get creative and experiment with their own designs. Come express yourself with some sassy stitching!

Knot Too Shabby! – NEW!

Discover new ways to create! Join us for a variety of string crafts including lanyard-making, friendship bracelets, beading, and yarn crafts like knitting and macrame. Learn to sew your own ribbon bookmarks and letter pillows. The focus and mission is to give you the skills and time to make lasting reminders of the beautiful days of summer!
